Beautiful Sunset - Great photo with an inexpensive camera

A Beautiful Sunset in Georgia Dec. 10, 2010

On the evening of Dec. 12th, 2010, we had a gorgeous sunset.  My wife saw it first and brought it to my attention.  Since I had just written about what beautiful photos are possible with inexpensive cameras these days I thought I'd try and see what our little Kodak EasyShare C160 could do with the sunset.

I quickly grabbed the camera, turned it on, and adjusted the menu settings on my way out the front door to capture the above photo.  When I edited the photo to present it on this web page, as always, I made it smaller and sharpened it a bit.  In the photo above I added a little more depth of color but it isn't much.  You can look at the unedited (and very large = 1.67MB) original by clicking the photo.

I think the original photo is pretty much stunning.  It proves my point that even an ignorant amateur consumer like me, who knows practically nothing about cameras or photography, can take beautiful photos with the right lighting and a good camera.  You don't need an expensive camera, you just need a good camera with a good lens.

Here are the statistics on the original photo.  Notice the original is rather large, 3472 pixels by 2605 pixels.

There's a button on top of the camera to turn the flash off or on.  I turned it on.  Sometimes dark photos like this sunset do better with the flash on.  The reason is because the camera automatically sets the "film speed" and aperture to more appropriate settings.

In the photo below, notice there are 4 buttons to the right of the view screen on the back of the camera. The one the green arrow is pointing to turns on the menu.  I went to the menu and changed the Color Mode selection to High Color which is indicated by the red arrow.

My snapshot camera was a closeout model when I bought it.  The Kodak C160 last sold at Wal-Mart for $69 (June 2012).  Kodak has been going out of business for a while.  They filed for bankruptcy.  Their cameras are at great prices right now.  If you're concerned about the warrenty, just pay Wal-Mart $7 for the in-store warrenty replacement up front.  Within a year, they'll replace the camera with a like model if anything happens to it.

The C160 isn't available but there are better models for the same price.  Walmart has a Kodak FZ41-RD Digital Camera for $65.88 (Nov. 2013 price).  It's a 16 megapixel camera making it a better deal than the C160 and for the same price.  Here's the Wal-Mart link:   CLICK HERE.

Be sure to compare features on other Kodak models as well as other camera brands.  Make sure the ones you compare have a reputation for good lenses.
